It eventually comes to light that DCI Huntley killed Ifield during a fight between the two of them at his home and she admits to his accidental manslaughter as is a given a 10-year sentence for it.Īnother conundrum throughout the series is who a mysterious character known as “H” is – they have been referred to by other characters for being involved in shady activities. DI Arnott survives but ends up in a wheelchair. Meanwhile, a mystery man in a balaclava pushes Steve Arnott down the stairs and finding out who this man is, becomes another key plotline. Ifield is later found dead and DCI Huntley returns to work with a hand injury. She is brought to the squad’s attention by forensic co-ordinator Tim Ifield (Jason Watkins), who alerts them to a possible miscarriage of justice in her team’s arrest of a suspected serial killer.ĭCI Huntley confronts Ifield, after suspecting he has reported her. He is chased but carries out a heroic deed, jumping in front of bullets aimed at Kate Fleming, leading to his death but saving her life.Ĭottan’s words, recorded before he died, also help the unit catch the chief abuser in the ring. She also manages to uncover that Cottan is in fact The Caddy, and is later killed by him.Ĭottan is interrogated but escapes dramatically from Central Police HQ. Waldron is also killed in mysterious circumstances.ĭI Denton, who was imprisoned in series two, is freed and manages to get a copy of the list of abusers to AC-12. He tries to pass on the information to the police but the investigation is thrown off track after the list is intercepted and destroyed by criminal inside-man Cottan. It later emerges he has a list of names of people who were part of a child abuse ring that operated at the home he was in when he was a child and he was seeking revenge. He tries to cover it up, pretending the suspect shot a gun first and tries to get colleagues to go along with it – attracting the attention of AC-12. Sergeant Danny Waldron (Daniel Mays) is involved in a police raid in which he shoots an unarmed suspect dead. DI Denton, who did not know the whole story behind the plot, is blamed for it all and is sent to prison, while Cottan gets away with it, earning himself a role in AC-12. While she was involved in a small way, it was in fact Cottan who had masterminded the ambush to try to protect his secret identity as The Caddy. It is not actually revealed that the prisoner in the convoy is Hunter till partway through the series.ĭI Lindsay Denton ( Keeley Hawes), who survived the ambush, is suspected of being involved in the attack. It is revealed that DS Matthew “Dot” Cottan (Craig Parkinson), nicknamed The Caddy, had been an inside man for the gangster Tommy Hunter. But the anti-corruption squad discover DCI Gates had been part of an attempted cover-up of a hit and run involving his partner Jackie Laverty, who later gets killed.ĭCI Gates finds himself being framed by gangster John “Tommy” Hunter (Brian McCardle) and eventually commits suicide when he realises his career is finished.
